UNDERSTANDING THE FORMULA
Regulating the Middle Pill (Li Zhong Wan) is a famous formula written around 220AD by one of the sages of Chinese Medicine, Zhang Zhong Jing. It’s a simple yet powerful formula containing Codonopsis Root (Dang Shen), White Atractylodes (Bai Zhu), Ginger (Gan Jiang) and Licorice Root (Gan Cao) and acts to put the Yang Qi back in the digestive system. The Four Gentleman Decoction (Si Jun Zi Tang) is an equally famous formula recorded some time later in 1100AD. Created by simply swapping out the Ginger (Gan Jiang) for Poria (Fu Ling) Si Jun Zi Tang tonifies the Spleen Qi and clears Damp in a neutral manner. Both formulas aim to improve digestive function, allowing us to get more out of our food. Dioscorea (Shan Yao) and Astragalus (Huang Qi) are added to support the Spleen Qi tonifing actions while Job’s Tears (Yi Yi Ren) assists in clearing Damp.
Add to chicken or mushroom broth, drink as a tonic or add to rice porridge.
