UNDERSTANDING THE FORMULA
This blend contains two famous spirit calming formulas recorded by medical sage Zhang Zhongjing in 220AD. Gui Zhi Jia Gui Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus extra Cinnamon) warms and nourishes the Blood and Heart Yang. Comprised of Cassia Twig (Gui Zhi), White Peony (Bai Shao), Ginger (Gan Jiang), Licorice Root (Gan Cao), Chinese Dates (Hong Zao) and Cinnamon Bark (Rou Gui) this simple variation of Gui Zhi Tang is frequently used for anxiety that manifests as palpitations, ‘rushing up’ sensations, flushing and feeling emotionally unground. With the addition of Unripened Wheat (Fu Xiao Mai) to the already present Licorice Root (Gan Cao) and Chinese Dates (Hong Zao) we create Gan Mai Da Zao Wan (Licorice, Wheat and Date Decoction)
Gan Mai Da Zao Wan is a simple yet incredibly effective formula for zang zao or “restless organ” disorder. As the name implies the hallmarks of this condition are agitation, restlessness, anxiety and uncontrollable crying. Described as a formula to return lost souls these three herbs are both nourishing and calming for the Spirit. Altogether this blend creates a tonic that not only tastes deliciously sweet and rich in cinnamon but is good for the soul.
Add to your favourite broth, soup, stew, porridge, smoothie or drink as a tonic.
