UNDERSTANDING THE FORMULA

Astragalus (Huang Qi), White Atractylodes (Bai Zhu) and Siler Root (Fang Feng) make up the formula Jade Windscreen Decoction (Yu Ping Feng San).
First recorded in the year 1213 these three herbs are combined to strengthen the Wei Qi, or defence energy, against external pathogenic influences. You can think of it like putting up a screen or window in your house to protect from harsh elements. The addition of Dioscorea (Shan Yao) supports that strengthening action by nourishing the Spleen, Lung and Kidney Qi. Shiitake (Dong Gu) and Ganoderma (Reishi Mushroom) are both known in western and Chinese herbalism for their immune bolstering abilities and add a flavoursome boost.
